- 2 cups peeled and diced apples
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup currants
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/2 cup suet or unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup apple cider or brandy
- 1 tablespoon lemon zest
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 double pie crust (top and bottom)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine chopped meat, apples, raisins, currants, brown sugar, suet or butter, and all the spices.
- Pour in apple cider or brandy, add lemon zest and juice, and stir everything together.
- Simmer the mixture for 30–45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and syrupy.
- Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool completely.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out bottom pie crust and line a 9-inch pie pan. Trim edges.

- Add top crust, trim excess dough, and crimp the edges. Cut small steam slits in the top.
- Bake on the middle oven rack for 35–45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling.
- Cool on a wire rack for at least 1–2 hours before slicing and serving.
Notes
- This pie can be made ahead of time and reheated before serving.
- For a sweeter version, consider adding a little extra sugar or some chopped dried fruit.
